Pages, Menus, and Blocks in Drupal7Pages, Menus, and Blocks in Drupal7

Categories:

In this video we take a look at creating a few pages and creating Menu-Links, formerly Menu-Items, and then nesting those Menu-Links. We also explore the 2 different ways of viewing the Main-Menu, formerly Primary-Links.

It's rather amazing how much has changed in Drupal7. If you're familiar with Drupal6 then you'll quickly notice that more features have been added You may even notice that there are a great many smallish contrib modules that have grown wings and flown over to Drupal7 core. In some cases they have added functionality that is tightly woven into Drupal core.

In this Video we're going to do the following

  1. Create a Basic-Page, formerly known as just PAGE and give that page a Menu-Link "About-Us" and assign it to the Main-Menu
  2. We then create a 2nd Basic-Page and give it a Menu-Link "Still-More" but this time we assign the Menu-Link to be placed UNDER the previous page's Menu-Link
  3. We navigated the site to show that there is no sign whatsoever of that 2nd, nested link
  4. Heading over to the Appearance link on the top, Admin menu, we chose the Settings link to change the settings of our themes
  5. We turned OFF [unchecked] the Main-Menu so that the theme no longer controlled the rendering of the Main-Menu
  6. After saving and closing the page we saw that the Main-Menu was completely gone. It was no where on the page at all
  7. Heading over to the Structure link on the top, admin menu we chose Blocks to see which blocks were disabled and which blocks were assigned to which regions
  8. Seeing that the Main-Menu block was disabled, we assigned it to the header just to see what would happen
  9. Going back to the front page we saw that the Main-Menu had returned BUT it was on the left side of the header and it had a big title of "Main-Menu" appearing above it
  10. We selected the link labelled "About-Us" and saw Main-Menu change. The link for our second page was now appearing under the title "Main-Menu"

At this point we played around a little bit just to see how things changed if we made small adjustments to the setup. I strongly encourage you to play around with this demo and learn a lot!
