Drupal Video: Admin Tricks with MODULE FILTER & VERTICAL TABSDrupal Video: Admin Tricks with MODULE FILTER & VERTICAL TABS

Categories:

You have to agree that Drupal admin screens can be pretty gnarly to interact with. If you want a better looking Modules listing page and if you want a tidier node add and node edit form... Then read on and watch the video at the end.

OK. I Pride myself on being HIPP and knowing about the newest modules and the coolest modules. I can not explain how I missed the MODULE FILTER module.

WHAT IT DOES:
Every module is assigned to a PACKAGE as set forth in the module's .info file. As the number of modules in your Drupal site grows you may find yourself with pages and pages of scrolling to find the module you are looking for. The MODULE FILTER module creates a vertical column on the left of your Module listing page which breaks the modules list down by PACKAGE. By default it shows ALL modules then you can select the PACKAGE that you want; say, UBERCART-CORE for instance.

Another feature is the dual purpose filter. You can show just enabled or just disabled modules or even required modules - modules on which other modules depend, or unavailable modules - modules that can not be enabled because they depend on other modules that are either missing OR are not enabled. Lastly, you can type characters into a text field and a real time filter will search TITLES only and list only modules with those characters in the TITLE!
SERIOUSLY!!! Where has this module been all my life!

Next I show off VERTICAL TABS. Now this one is in wide use, but in my many travels I am finding many people who have not seen it before. When you imagine a node/add or node edit page you can picture [once again] a long scroll of pages with many settings that you are not likely to be making any changes to. The VERTICAL TABS module yanks all that scrolling data and organizes it in a vertical column to the left. When you select Authoring Information THEN you get to see those fields to the right. If you want to make a change to the path setting then select URL Path Settings and have at it. It REALLY takes what can be an unruly form and make it very tame.

There you have it. Two modules that should be on EVERY site you create!
Can you think of more modules that should be spot lighted here? Comment to this post and let us know!

I think the theme he mentioned is actually "Zero Point" (http://drupal.org/project/zeropoint).

Hey Doug, where can one find this "Zero" theme? Not on drupal.org, for sure... Is this a drupal theme?

I'd hear of Vertical Tabs. I've even used it on a couple of sites. Works great. I've never heard of Menu Filter before but (thanks to Drush) I've got it running on all my drupal sites by the time the video was over. Thanks for the great tip.
